A fuel tanker truck crash shut down portions of I-283 in Dauphin County, state transportation officials announced on Tuesday night, June 10.

The scene of the overturned fuel tanker.

The traffic delays on I-283 due to the fuel leaking from an overturned trailer.

The truck flipped onto its side around 7:56 p.m. on the approach to I-83 north and southbound and Route 322 west toward Hershey, according to PennDOT spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler.

The crash occurred near Exit 2 for Route 441/Lindle Road in Swatara Township. Fuel leaked from both the cab and the tanker, prompting a major shutdown and lengthy cleanup.

As of 9:30 p.m., the tanker was confirmed to need emptying, and the closure was extended by at least five hours.

Later, a transfer tanker arrived, but a breach underneath the flipped tanker complicated recovery. Emergency crews dug up the median to contain the spill.

On Wednesday morning, the ramp from I-283 to Route 322 eastbound toward Hershey remained closed while the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection conducted hazmat remediation. It was expected to reopen by 3 p.m.

At 10:58 a.m., PennDOT announced the ramp had officially reopened. Soil remediation crews are now applying for the necessary permits to begin environmental cleanup, and PennDOT crews will return at a later date to replace the damaged guide rail.

No injuries were reported. Motorists are reminded to continue using caution in the area.
